Chee-Chai Alien (Japanese: ちっちゃいエイリアン) is a Japanese Game Boy Color video game released on February 27, 2001 by Creatures, Inc. It may be classed as a monster collecting game with elements of both monster battling and pet-raising.

It makes heavy use of the Game Boy Color's infrared port, which is the sole means of obtaining new characters (known as Chaliens) and is packaged with a device to enhance the strength of the infrared sensor known as the "spectrum communicator". The game does not work on any other Game Boy model, including the Game Boy Advance and later models, because they do not feature an infrared port.

The name of this game is derived from the Japanese word "chitchai"; describing something tiny, and "alien".

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

After being introduced to the basics of the game by a small black alien known as Saraba, and the Chalien "Li'l Blue" (Japanese name Aochan), the player must collect Chaliens from artificial light sources using the Game Boy Color's infrared sensor.

Each Chalien is available with their own "pheromone", and new pheromones may be unlocked by collecting all of the Chaliens in the previous pheromones.

The player may play with the Chaliens in a minigame similar to a pinball machine, and remove their dark matter to fuel rockets. The more points the player collects in the aforementioned minigame, the more points they may gain to play a new minigame, which varies based on the Chalien.

Many Chaliens' own minigame is a basic battle system against another monster. It has an element of luck in it, because each action will alternate and the player must land the cursor on the correct command they choose. Other Chaliens, such as Chidori have a special minigame which no other Chalien have.

If the player collects every single Chalien, then the game's staff credits will roll.

Franchise[edit | edit source]

Chee-Chai Alien was successful enough to spawn a new entry in the Chalien series, known as Nonono Puzzle Chalien for the Game Boy Advance. This game is a compilation of minigames featuring the Chalien characters, but without the collectable monsters. The "Kurupachi 6" minigame from this title was re-released for Nintendo DSiWare as "Kurukuru Action: Kurupachi 6" (Japanese: くるくるアクション くるパチ6) which was released overseas as "Spin Six", but without its "Battle" mode nor any of the other minigames included in the original Game Boy Advance game. Spin Six localised many of the Chalien names, some of which can be seen in the digital manual, others through character intermissions that may play by chance after attempting a puzzle.
